Since
the 1997 Red River Flood, considerable effort has been made in gathering
and developing information that can be used in future flood events
to improve the ability to respond. Work carried out under the direction
of the International Joint Commission (IJC) Red River Task Force includes
the development of a computer model that can predict flood levels
over the flood plain, and the expansion of monitoring networks.
This decision-support project, developed under the Canada-Manitoba
Partnership Agreement on Red River Valley Flood Protection, uses the
computer model for predicting flood levels and provides water managers
and flood fighters in the Red River Valley with an easy to use, map-based
tool to assist them in responding to a flood emergency in the valley.
The project uses geographic information system (GIS) based tools to
facilitate the use and analysis of the wide variety of data and information
available in the valley.
